Jesus lived in a nation that was convinced it was doing what was right. And yet, they eventually put the only righteous man in all of history to death as a criminal. Because of Jesus' beliefs and teaching, they viewed him as someone who was corrupting their society and harming others. He was rejected by his family and neighbours, betrayed by his friends, and outlawed by the governing class.
Although Jesus knew this was his fate, he also taught that the same would fall upon his followers. As Christians, we are called to follow Jesus above all else. We should expect suffering and rejection, yet still, be able to stand strong in the Lord. Just like Jesus and his followers throughout history, we must love our neighbours by pointing them to the gospel no matter the cost.
In anticipation of the years to come in Canada, we will look at the life and death of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark as we commit ourselves to follow him no matter the cost.
